If I say Sushi, what would you say? YES! Is the only correct answer.
I had the pleasure of eating at the newest Sushi place in Doraville this week, called Kula it is an international brand, with 400 restaurants in Japan and this is the 13th revolving sushi bar in the US. They have places in California, Texas, and now Georgia.
Hosted by Davo Eda, the Public Relations Manager, he was so kind to invite me in to see the new place. He even let me bring a friend, so of course I brought my favorite lady Callie, to help me eat and take pictures.
We were introduced to Mr. Fresh, it is the plate holder for the conveyor belt, "he" holds the green plates of food and treats. There was a tutorial of how to grab the food from the belt, as well as how to order from the menu and dispose of your plates. Mr. Fresh keeps the food germ free, has a chip in it for timing and every 2 hours he lets a specialists know it is time to throw the food out. This technology helps cut down on waste.
We asked Davo "why Doraville?" He said they have done market research and are very strategic about where they place the restaurants. They like to be in a strip mall over a free standing place for high traffic reasons. Opening up their first Georgia location in a populated Asian environment would help them get a leg up on clientele that may already be familiar with the concept. The H Mart shopping complex seemed like a perfect spot to introduce Kula to the area.
The product and the process of this place is amazing, every piece of Sushi is machine rolled, thats right no humans roll your Sushi. They do this so the Sushi has more air in it, to be softer and melt in your mouth. Each section of the kitchen has a specialists for it to watch for quality. There is no MSG, no sweeteners, no artificial coloring, and no preservatives which sets their Sushi bad above all others.
You are greeted at the door with a smile, they will walk you to your table, take your drink order and answer your questions about the process of ordering food. They have a selection of drinks, teas, and will be serving beer and wine very soon.
We came in for lunch, it was busy, but we did not feel rushed. Every plate is $2.25 each and can have 1 to 4 pieces on each plate depending on what you pick. The pricing and menu are the same for lunch and dinner.
The revolving bar has a selection of Sushi from one of a kind choices like the Kula speciality roll with seared Salmon and sauce to classics like the Rainbow roll. The bar is on constant movement and is always being restocked.
If you order from the menu with over 110 items, you have choices from soups, sushi, tempura, and more. The screen is at every table and it tells you how many plates you have eaten, when your ordered meal is done, and allows you to check out. The menu changes 2 times a year, and they have a special event every month for 10 days, called Japan Fair, which they have special items flown in from Japan and focus on regions within the country.
Part of the fun for Kula is the "game" you play, for every 5 plates a cartoon comes on with characters. On the 15th plate you win a prize. You can win, stickers, key chains, and sushi themed erasers.
Now to the best part, the food. I will admit we tried very hard to eat everything. It's harder than you think, we had about 15 plates of Sushi. We also ordered from the menu and both very tasty. We won a prize for all our hard work.
Spicy popcorn shrimp roll
Kula, Rainbow, and Caterpillar rolls
Red Dragon Roll
The Spicy Tuna
Yukhoe Tuna
Miso soup with Ramen
I also ordered the Miso soup and it is now my favorite in the city. Lots of flavor, just enough salt, and pork! You know I Love Pork!
I will be coming back here again. If you want a quick and tasty lunch, this is a great place. There is something for everyone to order and you can be out as fast as you would like. Not to mention its a very well priced sushi bar. If you want a nice dinner for a date, this is a great place to enjoy the "floor show" and share some amazing food.
